Message from the President | May 2020

Dear Members and Friends of the Los Angeles World Affairs Council & Town Hall,

It was exciting to hear Governor Gavin Newsom’s announcement about the reopening on May 8 of lower-risk businesses and public spaces in California. I was particularly delighted to see bookstores among the list of retailers eligible to reopen.

Events with notable authors and their books have been a longstanding tradition at the Los Angeles World Affairs Council & Town Hall.  Our members, as lifelong learners, appreciate the written word. Here’s a fun fact as we’ve been sheltering in place – reading helps the brain stay mentally fit!

Our webinar on May 12 offers a special opportunity to hear and learn from Jerry Brown, who served as the 34th and 39th Governor of California. He is the subject of award-winning editor and author Jim Newton’s new book – “Man of Tomorrow – The Relentless Life of Jerry Brown.” We present this program in partnership with Writers Bloc.  It’s an event you won’t want to miss as Newton talks to Gov. Brown about his career and leadership in times of crisis.

“Is the May 15 Lockdown Ending?” is a timely discussion on May 18 with LA County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger and Dr. Barbara Ferrer, Director, LA County Dept. of Public Health. Barger and Dr. Ferrer have been providing daily briefings on coronavirus statistics.

Webinar attendees have given a thumbs-up on the weekly sessions on Wednesdays with our program partner, World Trade Center-LA, and the “Politics in the Time of Coronavirus” sessions each Thursday with Dan Schnur, Politics Professor - USC, Pepperdine, Berkeley. The weekly frequency means webinars focus on the latest developments and updates affecting our region and its connectivity to the U.S. and our global partners.

We encourage you to register early. The Q&A periods have been robust with more questions than time available to answer all questions.  As a benefit to LAWACTH members, you may submit your question in advance to Membership Coordinator Krystsina Shavanaba at this email – Member questions will be presented first to our speakers. If you wish to join LAWACTH, click here.

Our live stream webinars are presented as a public service, free of charge. Though, we, too, have been financially affected by this pandemic. If you can, we are grateful for donations from our members and community of webinar attendees. Contributions are accepted here. Thank you, and I look forward to connecting with you at a future webinar!
