The future of the automobile industry will increasingly see technology firms from Silicon Valley and elsewhere overlapping with traditional automakers in Detroit, Germany and Japan. Will the tech companies dominate? Or will the automakers’ century-old experience of mass manufacturing, nationwide network of dealers and their political backing in Congress keep them in the game? Will there be a wave of mergers, or will a few companies survive and the rest fade away? This plenary panel will look at the bigger picture of how the automotive industry might reorganize itself in the coming decades.
