Join us for a discussion with Yale University historian and award-winning author Alan Mikhail, in conversation with scholar and author Reza Aslan, who will present a lesser known perspective on the history of the world: that the Muslim world—not the West or Christianity’s sphere of influence—drove and determined world events for centuries. This version of history centers the East, its people, and their faith. Mikhail argues this version of history was suppressed and rewritten for centuries following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.

Mikhail and Aslan will also address how current politics in the Middle East, including the Sunni-Shi’ite divide, stretches back to the Ottoman Empire, why these angles on history are not what most people in the West learn in school about world events, and how this is symptomatic of a greater suppression of Muslim history. It will be a conversation that will challenge conventional wisdom about both the past and the present.
