Join us for a Fireside Chat with Mexican Ambassador to the US, Martha Barcena Coqui, hosted by Honorable Maria Contreras-Sweet, 24th Administrator US Small Business Administration. Ambassador Barcena Coqui has had over 40 years of experience in the Mexican Foreign Service and will outline her plans for the bilateral relationship between the US and Mexico, while also addressing current tensions such as Trump’s national emergency declaration. Along with discussing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, Ambassador Barcena Coqui will provide insight into Mexico’s other allies, plans for economic and diplomatic growth, and the unique role California plays in guiding US-Mexico relations. 

The live conversation will be moderated by Maria Contreras Sweet, former White House Cabinet member under Barack Obama where she was the 24th administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

Ambassador Bárcena was appointed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and ratified by the Mexican Senate on December 2018, becoming the first female Ambassador to hold this position. Ambassador Bárcena joined the Mexican Foreign Service in 1979. Prior to arriving in Washington, D.C., she was posted as Permanent Representative to the United Nations Rome-based Agencies. She has also served as Ambassador to the Republic of Turkey, non-resident to Georgia and the Republics of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan; Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark, non-resident to the Kingdom of Norway and the Republic of Iceland, and as Consul in Barcelona. On the multilateral level, Ambassador Bárcena has represented Mexico as delegate at the UN, UNESCO and the OAS as well as head of delegation at the Forum on Migration and Development.

Maria Contreras-Sweet served as an Obama cabinet member, California state cabinet official and investor/entrepreneur.  Her achievements in bringing efficiencies and modernization to large scale organizations have earned her international acclaim. Honorable Contreras-Sweet, was sworn in as a member of President Obama’s cabinet as the 24th Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).  She was charged with supporting America’s 28 million small businesses, which create a majority of US jobs and employ half of our nation’s private-sector workforce. As an entrepreneur, Contreras-Sweet is one of a few in the US to start a publicly-traded bank.  Headquartered in downtown Los Angeles, the bank focused on the small and mid-size market.  She served as its founding and executive chairwoman, successfully steering it through the great recession. Prior, she served as the California cabinet Secretary of the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
