The Haitian Earthquake Aftermath
The
2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic magnitude of 7.0 MMS
(the "moment magnitude scale" used by seismologists to measure
the size of earthquakes in terms of the energy released). Its
epicenter was near the town of Léogâne, approximately 25 km (16
miles) west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's historic capital. The
earthquake occurred on Tuesday, January 12th and by January
24th, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been
recorded.
The
death toll and related damage are almost beyond imagining. An
estimated three million people were directly affected by the
quake. The Haitian Government reports that between 217,000 and
230,000 people have died, with and additional 300,000 injured
and an estimated 1 million made homeless. Estimates of physical
damage include 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial
buildings that have either collapsed or suffered severe damaged.
The world reacted swiftly, and volunteers from
Merlin USA
(a global medical non-profit group working to save lives in
countries devastated by conflict, disease and disaster) quickly
arrived in Haiti to begin assisting those devastated by the
disaster. Many countries responded to appeals for humanitarian
aid, pledging funds and dispatching rescue and medical teams,
engineers and support personnel.
Come join the LAWAC Young Associates for a first-hand account
from Merlin Regional Director Alex Cottin, on
his experiences in Haiti, where things currently stand, what
needs to be done to help improve their way of living, and how
the people of Haiti are surviving this disaster.
