Once a landscape too harsh to capitalize on, in the face of an unfolding Climate Crisis, it is open-season at the Arctic. Previously dominated by frozen barriers, the melting sea ice is clearing shipping routes and uncovering natural resources. Stakes are sky-high, and players such as Russia, USA, and China ramp-up military and economic activity. In an evolving great-power playground, where each is racing for a piece of the pie, the lives of indigenous Arctic communities are directly impacted and forever changed.

Join us for a discussion about a rapidly changing Arctic - climate, geopolitics, economics, indigenous people - what can a future of governance in the region look like?

Our Panelists:

Prof. Steven Lamy is Professor of International Relations, Spatial and Environmental Studies at the University of Southern California. He leads annual study delegations to three Arctic Council states: Iceland, Finland, and Norway.

Dr. Nelida Duran is Assistant Professor of Family and Consumer Sciences at California State University, Northridge. She lived for months at the time with Arctic indigenous communities, exploring the impacts of a changing region on its residents
