Southern California is laced with faults. Did you know — the Palos Verdes Fault and Newport-Inglewood – Rose Canyon Fault zones are each capable of earthquakes that could be much worse for the Los Angeles-Long Beach Port Complex than would be a ‘Big One’ on the San Andreas Fault?

While the 1971 San Fernando and 1994 Northridge earthquakes have jarred millions of us in different ways, these lesser-known, slow-moving and seemingly less hazardous faults actually have a higher risk of triggering significant shaking, structural damage and business disruption. Under these conditions, how exposed and vulnerable are Angelenos?

As Los Angeles continues to grow in population and density, what should we know about modern-day infrastructure and constructions to support and sustain our mega-city? Join geophysicist Dr. Ken Hudnut, U.S. Geological Survey, Earthquake Science Center, for this “Coffee and Conversations” program.
