Janet Napolitano, Former Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, will discuss how the department has succeeded and failed since its inception after 9/11, and whether it can still keep America safe as security risks rapidly evolve. Napolitano, currently the President of University of California, will discuss why the department is still struggling to address cybersecurity threats and concerns, and how it might overcome those challenges. She will address the humanitarian and security crisis at the border, as crossings of families and children have tripled since this time last year and border resources have become overwhelmed. She will also discuss the effectiveness of terrorism prevention since 9/11 and the rise of citizens who are radicalized in the US as terrorist groups find new ways to recruit online.

Janet Napolitano is a distinguished public servant with a record of leading large, complex organizations at the federal and state levels. She served as secretary of Homeland Security from 2009-2013. Before that, she was the governor of Arizona, previously serving as attorney general of Arizona and before that as US attorney for the District of Arizona. She was the first woman to chair the National Governors Association, and was named one of the nation's top five governors by Time magazine. Since 2013, she has served as the president of the University of California.
