In summer 2014, the Southern California Grantmakers (SCG) advocated sweeping reforms recommended by the L.A. County’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Child Safety to the County Board of Supervisors. This action saw foundations stepping outside their traditional grant-making roles to influence public policy. SCG’s leaders sought to leverage their philanthropic investments with public agency funds to affect long-lasting change in LA’s foster care system – the nation’s largest with 10,000 children.

This collective impact strategy, intended to stimulate innovation, resulted in the creation of the Center for Strategic Partnerships. Since its launch in 2016, the partners have co-invested more than $4.5 million to transform LA County’s system serving vulnerable youth. What’s ahead for this office? What is the strategic value of public-private collaboration in solving LA’s social issues? Can foundations lead the way in social change as a movement? What are the Center’s successes to date?
