President Trump has shaken up the US-led world order and “abdicated the throne” of global leadership, according to James M. Lindsay, Senior Vice President of the Council on Foreign Relations. Lindsay will discuss how this international world order was already fraying and why he thinks the administration’s America First policy will continue this trend. He will also talk about how and why he believes China will be the one to step into that empty “throne” and what that would mean for a new world order. Lindsay will address how this policy has affected relationships with our allies and Americans at home.

James M. Lindsay is Senior Vice President, Director of Studies and Maurice R. Greenberg Chair at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), where he oversees the work of the more than six dozen fellows in the David Rockefeller Studies Program. He is a leading authority on the American foreign policymaking process and the domestic politics of American foreign policy. Dr. Lindsay has written widely on various aspects of American foreign policy and international relations. His latest book is The Empty Throne: America's Abdication of Global Leadership, co-authored with Ivo H. Daalder.

This event will be moderated by Derek Shearer, Stuart Chevalier Professor of Diplomacy and World Affairs and Director of the McKinnon Center for Global Affairs at Occidental College. Shearer served in the Clinton administration as an economics official in the Commerce Department and then as Ambassador to Finland (1994-97).
