Martin Dahinden, Ambassador of Switzerland to the US, will address LAWAC Board and International Circle members at an Ambassador Roundtable lunch on October 11. Ambassador Dahinden will discuss Switzerland’s unique relationship with the European Union and the ongoing struggle to finalize relations before Brexit officially goes into effect next year. As the 15th largest trading partner with the US ($57.7 billion in 2017), he will also talk about how President Trump’s trade negotiations are affecting the Swiss-US trade relationship. The Ambassador will also discuss how Swiss banks are handling US sanctions on Russia and Iran.

Dahinden has been the Swiss ambassador to the US since October 2014. Following his studies in economics and economic history at the University of Zurich, Dahinden joined the diplomatic service of Switzerland, with postings in Bern, Paris, Geneva, Lagos, New York and Brussels. He led the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining from 2000 to 2004, followed by the Directorate for Resources at the Swiss foreign ministry (through 2008). Before his nomination as ambassador to the U.S., Dahinden was head of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, one of Switzerland's most powerful government agencies.
