Putin mastered the art of “fake news” long before it became an issue in US politics, according to historian and Yale professor Timothy Snyder. At a LAWAC Global Café Breakfast on Tuesday, May 1st, Snyder will talk about how Putin has created a system where truth no longer counts, where the media is systematically manipulated, and where interfering and spreading misinformation in the political systems of other countries has become a routine part of his foreign policy. Snyder will look at how Putin honed his misinformation tactics during the invasion of Ukraine and how he then systematically set out to undermine Americans’ faith in democracy and free markets during the 2016 election campaign.

Timothy Snyder is the Housum Professor of History at Yale University and a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. He received his doctorate from the University of Oxford in 1997, where he was a British Marshall Scholar. Before joining the faculty at Yale in 2001, he held fellowships in Paris, Vienna, and Warsaw, and an Academy Scholarship at Harvard. A remarkable linguist, Snyder speaks five and reads ten European languages. Among his publications are six single-authored award-winning books, all of which have been translated, including Bloodlands, Black Earth and On Tyranny. His most recent book is The Road to Unfreedom: Russia, Europe, America. Read a review here.
