Africa has some of the world’s fastest growing economies: Ghana and Ethiopia are likely to grow by more than 8% this year, and Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal and Tanzania will be close to 7% GDP growth. Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao, African Union Ambassador to the US, will discuss the future of Africa at a Roundtable Lunch on Friday, March 30. Dr. Chihombori-Quao says that despite the progress it bothers her that Africa is the richest continent on earth in terms of natural resources, and yet is still the poorest continent in terms of per capita GDP. She will talk about how the African Union (AU), which counts all 55 African countries as members, can help to work toward a more independent and prosperous Africa and what the US can do to support those goals. She will also talk about China’s increasingly powerful role in African countries, and the growing backlash against Chinese influence.

Before becoming the AU ambassador to the US in 2016, Dr. Chihombori-Quao, was the Chair of the AU’s African Diaspora Health Initiative (AU-ADHI), where she mobilized African doctors in the diaspora to assist in addressing the healthcare crisis on the continent of Africa. Prior to her involvement with the AU, Dr Chihombori-Quao was a  family medicine doctor in Murfreesboro, Tennessee for 25 years. She is a member of the American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians and Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians.
