US-Russian relations have gone from bad to worse to downright awful in recent years. It started with the 2014 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the resulting US-backed sanctions on Moscow, and got worse with Russia’s intervention in Syria and the Russian role in hacking the 2016 US elections. Celeste Wallander, the main Russia advisor to former President Obama, will discuss the deterioration of US-Russian relations and their uncertain future at a LAWAC Global Café Breakfast on Tuesday, January 30. Wallander, who is now the President and CEO of the non-profit US-Russia Foundation, will talk about President Putin’s international strategy, his confrontation with the US, and his chances of winning the Russian presidential elections in March 2018 (hint: pretty high). She will also discuss how Russia’s election hacking fits into its overall intelligence operations targeting the west.

Celeste Wallander is President and CEO of the US-Russia Foundation. From 2013-17 she served as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Russia/Eurasia on the National Security Council. Prior to that she was Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia/Ukraine/Eurasia from 2009 to 2012. She was a visiting professor at Georgetown University (2006-2008), Director for Russia/Eurasia at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (2001-2006), and professor of Government at Harvard (1989-2000). She is the author of over 80 publications on European and Eurasian security issues, focused on Russian foreign and defense strategy. She received her Ph.D. and Masters degrees from Yale University, and her B.A. from Northwestern.
