Where does the US go with its Iran policy in the coming months and years, as scrutiny of the 2015 nuclear deal increases and Iran continues to provoke the US with ballistic missile tests and support for Shiite armed groups around the Middle East? Ambassador Thomas Pickering, former US ambassador to the UN, will discuss the Iran Nuclear Deal and the bigger strategic picture of the region at a LAWAC Roundtable luncheon on Wednesday, October 25th. He will discuss the possibilities of potentially abandoning the deal, or attempting to renegotiate it, and what the ramifications and downsides of such moves would be. He will also look at the links in policy-making over Iran to the simultaneous attempts to halt North Korea’s nuclear program, another high-priority issue in Washington.

Ambassador Thomas R. Pickering holds the rank of Career Ambassador, the highest in the U.S. Foreign Service. In a diplomatic career spanning five decades, he was U.S. ambassador to Israel, the Russian Federation, India, El Salvador, Nigeria, and Jordan. From 1989 to 1992, he was Ambassador to the United Nations in New York, and he then served as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs. Earlier in his career, he was Special Assistant to Secretaries of State William P. Rogers and Henry Kissinger. He also served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserves.
